From among the total of almost 600 international events held in Riga in 2015, approximately one-third were related to the EU presidency. However, there were also more than 250 other conferences and congresses as well as around 100  international corporate events taking place in Riga last year.

Out of all the events unrelated to the EU presidency, 45 conferences were organised by various European associations. The three largest conferences were those of the medical and IT industry, and the total number of participants from more than 26 countries reached 4700 people.

According to Aigars Smiltans, Director of the local convention bureau “MEET RIGA”, Riga is becoming increasingly popular as a place where conferences, congresses, and corporate events are organised: "Riga is very accessible by various means of transport, and our capital is like a pearl that makes every event so special.”

Many significant international events will also be held in Riga in 2016. Although safety concerns have affected tourism all around Europe and large-scale conferences are cancelled more often, Riga has managed to attract several important events.

Among venues, the Latvian National Library has become one of the most popular new venues for conference events in Riga. Conferences are successfully organised also in academic establishments, such as the University of Latvia and Riga Technical University.
